Small living room table and best sofas. Today I want to continue the topic of the living room, which I raised in the last article on furniture, and talk about table and sofas design for a small living room — isn’t this a pressing question for residents of many modern cities?
Even though a living room is often called a “big” room, especially in Eastern Europe, not always it is: in small apartments, and especially one-room studios a living room represents a very limited space. In this article we will look at 13 basic techniques for the furniture filling of small living rooms that will help you create a functional and comfortable interior.
Small living room was one of the main difficulties of our project for a two-level apartment in Moscow. Using the techniques, which we discuss below, we were able to create a comfortable space for the whole family.
Color and light. Neutral color gamma
The best way to visually expand the space is to use light, neutral colours. The furniture will visually merge with the walls and nothing is going to hold the look.
White color small living room table and sofas
White color is a classic technique in the design of small spaces. White small living room table, light floor, white walls and curtains, white furniture and decor — small living room visually will be much more spacious.
The power of natural lighting in a small living room
Living room is not the place where we need heavy, huge curtains. Hang it on the window simple light tulle or Roman shades without a pattern. Bouncing off the bright walls and furniture, natural light help to visually expand the space. Read about the beautiful design of the Windows in this article.
Artificial lighting also plays a big role in the design of a small living room. Don’t be satisfied with a chandelier, giving is often directed down, “crushing” light. Create the spot light and the play of shadows due to the floor lamp, table lamps, console or Cabinet, wall sconces, illuminating the mirror, the lamp on the painting. Multilevel lighting will make the living room cozy and intimate, and illuminated the corners will visually help to expand the boundaries.
Furniture for small living room: sofas
Choose furniture that matches the dimensions of a small room. Even if the size of the room fits in a large plump sofa, it is better to choose a small double bed and couple of elegant chairs. In this case, the room will seem much more spacious and roomier.
Visually light looking furniture
When choosing furniture for a small living room, pay attention not only to its actual size, but also a visual look. Furniture in bright colors, graceful backrest and armrests, sofas and armchairs on legs look much lighter than the dark, heavy chairs, a fully enclosed covers.
Cabinets and shelving, custom made specially for your apartment, will help to solve the problem of lack of space for finished module storage. Experienced carpenter wisely uses every millimeter of space, and this furniture is often no more than finished cabinets and drawers.
Furniture and decor of clear glass and acrylic can help deceive eyes. Transparent small living room table, chairs, vases visually disappear in the room making it more spacious.
Multifunctional furniture for small living rooms
Note the pieces of furniture that perform several functions: Poof (Ottoman) can serve as a dressing table, and when guests come, it is an additional Seating place. Often, these puffs have a roomy drawer for storage.
At furniture stores and online stores, you also can find folding coffee table. We used one like this in our last project: a two-bedroom apartment in Moscow — a coffee table turns into a full dining small living room table, increasing in height and width.
The backrest and armrests of chairs and sofas can also have built-in storage space on these mini-shelves you can place books, DVDs, decor items.
Make it to the top!
If you have a small living room, use all space of the room’s height you can. High shelves, hanging shelves and cupboards reaching up to the ceiling will help to solve the problem of storage and unloading space.
Shift the furniture away from the walls
Contrary to popular opinion, furniture placed close to walls and corners, visually devours the space. Look around your living room — do you see the floor? Pushing the sofa away from the wall and placing chairs in the center of the room, you will visually increase the living room area. If your small living room is part of studio apartments or combined with kitchen and dining area, a sofa set in the center, will help to divide the room into zones.
An indispensable thing for a small bedroom or hallway, is a large mirror in the living room which nowadays is rarely used. And for a good reason! Mirrors reflecting the light and surrounding objects, visually significantly add to the square in even the most cramped bathroom. You can hang a large mirror on the wall free, to choose cabinets and drawers with mirrored doors; consoles, dressing tables, bedside tables and lamps can also be mirrored.
Striking visual accent
When a person enters the room and his eye immediately catches the beautiful bright painting, photograph or poster, the issue of a small room is not that notable. One painting can set the tone for the whole room and another piece of decor is often not required.
I hope that using these tips, you will make your small living room more comfortable, cozy and functional!
